Dr. Madhav Desai is a board-certified interventional endoscopist, esophagus expert and gastroenterologist at the Borland Groover Clinic affiliated with the St. Vincent Ascension (Riverside and Southside) Hospitals and the Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville (South and Clay).

Dr. Desai has focused on offering personalized care that is tailored to his patients’ needs. His practice is based on patient education and application of evidence-based science. He takes the time to thoroughly explain each procedure to his patients to enable them to make informed decisions. He uses the latest technology to diagnose and treat various types of gastrointestinal conditions including cancers and performs complex endoscopic procedures. He is passionate about patient care and endoscopy to\ improve their outcomes and screening of gastrointestinal cancers to reduce the cancer burden. He is supportive of lifestyle and its impact on physical body including plant- based diet, yoga, stress reduction and sleep.

Dr. Desai specializes in a variety of gastrointestinal conditions including diagnosis, staging and therapy of gastrointestinal tumors using advanced endoscopic procedures (including endoscopic ultrasound and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography). Additionally, he has an expertise in the detection and therapy of precancerous lesions of gastrointestinal tract (Barrett’s esophagus and colorectal polyps). As an interventional gastroenterologist and esophagologist, he is proficient at taking care of patients with esophageal disorders (including dysphagia, GERD, achalasia and Barrett’s Esophagus), biliary and pancreatic disorders (including biliary and pancreatic stones and strictures, pancreatic necrosis with complications, screening for pancreas cancer) and management of colorectal polyps.

Besides upper endoscopy and colonoscopy, he performs endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), gastric-Per-oral endoscopic myotomy (G-POEM), endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), endoscopic ablation therapy, endoscopic stenting, and endoscopic anti-reflux therapy. Dr. Desai works closely with the oncology and surgery teams to help with the timely diagnosis, staging, and management of gastrointestinal tract cancers.

He has been very active improving the field of gastroenterology with his work outside of clinical care including 100+ peer-reviewed original research articles and book chapters. He has delivered several talks during international conferences and has been part of various societal efforts to improve care of patients. He also serves on the editorial board for multiple gastroenterology journals. His research has focused on the detection and management of precancerous lesions of gastrointestinal tract including Barrett’s esophagus and colorectal polyps. He has contributed significantly to clinical guidelines in past few years. Dr. Desai is an active member of several national and international GI societies such as American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and American Gastroenterological Association (AGA).

Dr. Desai joined Borland Groover from the University of Texas Houston McGovern Medical School where he completed his Interventional Gastroenterology fellowship. Dr. Desai received his medical degree from Government Medical College, Surat, India. He then completed master’s in public health followed by completing internal medicine residency as well as gastroenterology & hepatology fellowship training at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. After this, Dr. Desai worked as an assistant professor of medicine at the Kansas City VA Medical Center/ University of Kansas Medical Center followed by University of Minnesota Medical Center. He simultaneously trained medical students, residents, and fellows as a teaching faculty during this time. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, community service and reading.
