Irritable bowel syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome, also called IBS or spastic colon, is a chronic digestive health condition that affects the large intestine. IBS is a common disorder, diagnosed in millions of people each year. While it more commonly occurs in adults, it can also be diagnosed in children.
Irritable bowel syndrome is not dangerous and does not make you more likely to develop cancer, but it does require long-term management. IBS treatment is often as simple as making lifestyle changes like drinking more water, adding fiber to your diet, managing stress and avoiding trigger foods. In some cases, medications are prescribed to decrease the spasm in the bowel.
IBS SYMPTOMS
For many people, IBS symptoms continue for a long time, but are mild to moderate. On rare occasions, people with irritable bowel syndrome can experience severe symptoms.
IBS symptoms include:
- Abdominal pain
- Cramping
- Bloating
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Increased mucus in stool
- Changes in bowel habits
IBS CANNOT BE SELF-DIAGNOSED.

IBS DIAGNOSIS
Common IBS symptoms, like stomach pain, bloating and changes in bowel habits, may also be associated with other digestive health problems. A gastroenterologist can help determine the root cause of your symptoms and help you create an IBS treatment plan that puts you on the path to wellness.
There is no single test to reach an IBS diagnosis, meaning your gastroenterologist will start with a physical exam and ask questions about your medical history, symptoms and lifestyle. If necessary, they may recommend testing to rule out other conditions.
