Change in Bowel Habits

A noticeable change in bowel habits may include new constipation, diarrhea, stool caliber changes, urgency, or increased frequency. While temporary changes can occur with stress, travel, infections, or dietary shifts, persistent symptoms may indicate a more significant digestive condition.

Changes in bowel function are evaluated in the context of each patient’s overall symptoms, age, family history, and medical history. In some cases, additional testing may be recommended to evaluate for inflammatory conditions, infections, microscopic colitis, or colorectal cancer.
