What Is InterStim™ Therapy? 

InterStim™ therapy uses gentle nerve stimulation, known as sacral neuromodulation, to help correct the signals between your brain and bladder or bowel. This advanced, minimally invasive technology from Medtronic has helped hundreds of thousands of people around the world reduce sudden urges and regain confidence in daily life.

Patients may benefit if they experience: 

• Overactive bladder or urinary urgency/frequency 
• Accidental bowel leakage (fecal incontinence)

Try It Before You Commit 

One of the most unique advantages of InterStim™ therapy is that you can try the therapy first to see how it works for you. 

During a simple in-office or outpatient procedure, a thin lead is placed near the nerves that control your bladder and bowel. You’ll wear a small external device for about a week to test how well stimulation improves your symptoms. 

If you notice significant relief, your physician may recommend placing a long-term device that delivers the same gentle stimulation continuously and discreetly. 

Most people describe the sensation as a mild fluttering or tapping and not painful. 

Two Device Options 

If you move forward with long-term therapy, your provider will help you choose between two systems: 

InterStim™ X (Recharge-Free): 

• No recharging needed 
• Over 10 years of therapy under typical use 
• Full-body MRI compatible (under certain conditions) 

InterStim™ Micro (Rechargeable): 

• Smallest size available, which is only about the size of a paperclip
• 15-year battery life under standard use 
• Quick weekly recharging (around 20 minutes) 

Both options are adjustable using a smart handheld programmer, letting you fine-tune your therapy anytime. 

After the Procedure 

Following implantation, you and your Borland Groover provider will work together to fine-tune your settings for optimal comfort and results. 

Most patients return home the same day and resume light activities within a few days.
