Occasional heartburn is common, but persistent reflux symptoms can significantly affect sleep, eating habits and overall quality of life. Patients may experience burning in the chest, regurgitation, chronic cough, throat irritation, hoarseness or a sensation of food coming back upward after meals.
Over time, chronic acid exposure can lead to inflammation and damage within the esophagus, including Barrett’s esophagus and narrowing of the esophageal lining. Evaluation may involve upper endoscopy, reflux testing or motility studies to better understand the cause of symptoms and guide treatment beyond routine antacid therapy.
